New Delhi: The Opposition INDIA bloc on Tuesday announced former Supreme Court judge Justice (retired) B Sudershan Reddy as its Vice Presidential candidate. The decision was taken at a crucial meeting of the Opposition leaders today. The BJP-led NDA on Sunday named Maharashtra Governor and party veteran CP Radhakrishnan as the NDA candidate for Vice President. The second highest Constitutional post of the country fell vacant after Jagdeep Dhankar's shock exit last month.
Announcing the nomination, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said, "This Vice Presidential contest is an ideological battle, and all the Opposition parties agreed on this, and this is the reason we have nominated B Sudershan Reddy as the joint candidate." Calling Reddy one of India’s most distinguished progressive jurists, Kharge said that he has been a courageous champion of "social, economic and political justice".
Opposition recently held several rounds of talks to pick its VP nominee and deliberated over names like former ISRO scientist Mylswamy Annadurai and Mahatma Gandhi's great-grandson and author Tushar Gandhi, for the key post.
The Vice Presidential election is scheduled to be held on September 9. The Vice President is elected by an electoral college comprising members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
Who is B Sudershan Reddy?
Born in Rangareddy district of Telangana, Reddy began his judicial career as an advocate with the Bar Council of Andhra Pradesh in 1971 and went on to practice in the High Court. He was appointed as a permanent judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 1995. He went on to become the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court in 2005. He was appointed as a Supreme Court judge in January 2007 and retired in July 2011.
