New Delhi: With India ushering the new year along with the rest of the world, markets, streets, and residential areas are buzzing with celebrations and decorated with lights, flowers, and other items. People gathered on the streets since last night to welcome the New Year 2026.

The joy and cheers across the country are in full swing. North India, which is reeling under heavy cold and snowfall have ushered in the new year with high enthusiasm. Apart from streets, restaurants, bars, and clubs were filled with people celebrating the new year. With children and elders celebrating the arrival of the New Year, various institutions are likely to remain closed, while many are likely to remain open.

Below is the list of what will remain open and what will remain closed

Schools/colleges: While most of the schools and colleges are likely to remain open across the country, most schools in Delhi and several parts of north and north east are already closed due to harsh winters. The Punjab Government has announced the closure of schools until January 7 due to the cold.

Offices and departments: Most of the government offices, especially under the Centre, will remain open today. Several private offices may remain closed, while most of them will remain open.

Transport services: The public and private transport will remain open. The flights, trains, taxis, autos, metros, and buses will continue to operate as usual across the country. In North India and North East, services may be late due to winter.

Hospitals/Healthcare departments: The hospitals, both public and private, will remain open. The private clinic and dispensaries may remain closed. The medical shops are also likely to remain open in most parts of the country.

Stock markets and banks: While stock markets will remain open, most banks are also likely to remain open as usual. Both these institutions will operate as usual across India.
