In a major operation in Rajasthan's Tonk district, the DST (District Special Team) has seized a large consignment of explosives. Police recovered approximately 150 kg of ammonium nitrate from a car, which was hidden in sacks of urea fertilizer.
DSP Mrityunjay Mishra said, "A major action has been taken, in which explosives have been seized from a vehicle and this explosive was 150 kg of ammonium nitrate which was hidden in cuts of urea. Two accused have been arrested. All aspects of the case are being further investigated."
The police also seized around 200 explosive cartridges and six bundles of safety fuse wire (approximately 1,100 meters) from the car. They reportedly acted on a tip-off, and intercepted the car in the Baroni police station area. According to reports, the accused were taking the explosive material from Bundi to Tonk.
The police have arrested two accused, identified as Surendra Mochi and Surendra Patwa. They are being questioned as the police are trying to find out if the consignment was meant for illegal activities, including mining. The police have also seized the car.
Ammonium nitrate is mostly used as a fertiliser, but it can also be used for deadly purposes. The ingredient was used by terrorists along with other high-grade explosives in the blast near Red Fort in Delhi that killed 15 people. The suicide bomber, Umar-un-Nabi, possibly assembled the improvised explosive device (IED) improperly and hence the explosion took place.
