New Delhi: West Bengal is shivering in intense cold at the fag end of December 2025. At many places in the state, the temperature came down to 11 degrees, which has put the residents, especially in the districts, in distress. The streets have been engulfed by fog, with darkness prevailing for most of the days. Notably, Kolkata witnessed the coldest day of this year with the 11 degrees. Dense fog has enveloped roads, making journey difficult for people.
People in West Bengal are battling the chilling cold with the New Year just around the corner. The forecast of the Alipore Meteorological Department clearly shows dense fog in North Bengal and South Bengal and a slight increase in temperature. So, the weather is taking a 'U-turn' at the beginning of the new year. The hilly areas of North Bengal may welcome the new year with a shower of snow.
If you are in North Bengal, then there is good or bad news for you depending on how you like cold. There is a possibility of rain and snowfall in the high hilly regions, including Darjeeling, between December 31 and January 2.
High-altitude places like Sandakphu, Ghum, and Chatakpur may witness a white blanket of snow. While the daytime temperatures may remain below normal, the nighttime mercury may rise slightly. Meteorologists are also not ruling out the possibility of light rain in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Alipurduar districts.
On the other hand, the northerly winds are temporarily obstructed due to the influence of the western storm. Southerly winds will blow in South Bengal, resulting in a slight decrease in the intensity of winter and an increase in the minimum temperature. The night temperature in South Bengal, including Kolkata, is likely to rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in the next 2 to 3 days. The minimum temperature in Kolkata tomorrow is likely to be around 13 degrees Celsius. It will hover between 14 and 16 degrees Celsius in the first few days of January.
However, the intensity of fog is likely to increase. There will be a brief light fog in the morning of New Year's Day, but the sky will remain clear during the day. But between January 1 and 3, dense fog is likely to occur in parts of Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, East and West Burdwan, and Birbhum. Fog is likely to be heavy in Birbhum, West Burdwan, and Jhargram on the first day of the new year. Light to moderate fog is also likely in other districts.
A dense fog warning has been issued for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, South Dinajpur, Cooch Behar, Malda, North Dinajpur, Murshidabad and Nadia on Wednesday morning. Visibility will be between 199 metres and 50 metres.
