New Delhi: The battle for the Bengal Assembly elections 2026 is heating up. Amid such a scenario, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee traded barbs at each other on Tuesday, sharpening the attacks and upping the ante of the election campaigns.
Amit Shah on Tuesday fired all his guns on the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government. He alleged that the government has normalised corruption in Bengal, has worked to increase fear and infiltration, threatening the security of the state. Shah accused Banerjee of helping Bangladeshi infiltrators enter Bengal for electoral gains. He said that once the BJP comes to power, it would identify and remove infiltrators.
During a press conference, Shah said, "Over the last 15 years, Bengal has witnessed fear, corruption, and misgovernance. Infiltration has created a sense of insecurity and anxiety among the people. With the Assembly elections scheduled for April, it is evident that the people of Bengal are resolved to form a strong government focused on development, heritage, and the welfare of the poor, instead of fear, corruption, misgovernance, and infiltration."
Shah also attacked the ruling TMC government in the state over alleged infiltration along the Bengal borders. He said, "If we have to ensure the safety of our country, we need a patriotic government here that will seal the borders. Mamata Banerjee can't do this, only the BJP can." Also, he pointed out how the BJP has gained strength in Bengal over the years, and he hoped that the party would come to power in the upcoming Assembly elections.
CM Banerjee launched a scathing attack on the BJP while addressing a rally in Birsinghpur. He called Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi as Dushyasahan and Duryodhana from the epic Mahabharata. She said, "Dushasana, a disciple of Shakuni, has come to Bengal to gather information. As soon as the elections come, Dushasana and Duryodhana start appearing."
While Shah, the TMC-ruled Bengal, is a hub for terrorists, Mamata said, "If there are no terrorists in J&K, how did Pahalgam happen? Did you attack Pahalgam? Who was behind the incident that happened in Delhi?"
She called for the resignation of Shah and challenged him that the TMC will once again come to power in Bengal in 2026. Also, she threatened to drive the BJP out of the country if her party came to power in the Assembly elections. CM Banerjee also attacked the ECI over the SIR, alleging that 58 to 60 people have died due to the process.
