Amritsar: An Indian Sikh woman Sarabjeet Kaur, who did not return to India after visiting Pakistan, has been arrested and sent to a shelter home in the neighbouring country. She had gone to attend Guru Nanak Jayanti function along with a group of Indian pilgrims, but did not return.
It was later found that the 48-year-old woman changed her religion in Pakistan and got married to Nasir Hussain of Sheikhupura district, which is nearly 50 kilometres from Lahore. A few days ago, there were reports that she would be deported to India, which was cancelled at the last minute by Pakistani authorities.
Kaur and Hussain had earlier filed a petition in the Lahore High Court claiming that officials had conducted an illegal raids in their house in Sheikhpura and put pressure on them to end their marriage.
“Instead of following the court order, the Punjab police apprehended the couple and sent Ms Kaur to Darul Aman (government-run shelter home) in Lahore," news agency PTI quoted an official as saying.
He added, “The authorities already made an attempt to deport Kaur but failed due to the closure of the Wagah-Attari border." In a video that recently went viral, Kaur can be heard saying that she had approached the embassy in Islamabad recently to extend her visa and that also applied for Pakistani nationality.
“I am a divorcee and wanted to marry Hussain; therefore, I came here for the purpose,” she was quoted as saying further. Before her marriage, Saranjitwas given a Muslim name Noor. Mahinder Pal Singh, a former member of Pakistan’s Punjab assembly, had filed a plea in Lahore High Court alleging that she was an Indian spy.
