New Delhi: The Janata Dal (United) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have agreed to contest an equal number of seats, 101 each. This marks a shift in the balance of power within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the state. The remaining 41 seats will be distributed among smaller allies, including Chirag Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), which has been allocated 29 constituencies.
The equal division of seats hints at a decline in Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's bargaining power and the growing electoral strength of the BJP. Over the past four assembly elections, the strike rate, the ratio of seats won to seats contested for the JDU has sharply declined. The BJP's seat share, meanwhile, has significantly improved.
In the 2020 Assembly elections, the BJP contested 110 seats and won 74, achieving a strong 68 per cent strike rate. The JDU, on the other hand, contested 115 seats but managed to win only 43, a strike rate of just 37 per cent. The imbalance in performance has significantly reduced the JDU's leverage and eroded Nitish Kumar's once-dominant role in Bihar politics.
Nitish Kumar, who has served as Bihar's Chief Minister for nearly two decades across shifting alliances, now finds himself in an unprecedented position, sharing an equal footing with the BJP in terms of seat allocation. The JDU earlier played the senior partner in the coalition. The numbers now reflect a reversal of roles.
The BJP's steady rise in Bihar began after 2015, when Nitish Kumar broke ties with the saffron party to join hands with Lalu Prasad Yadav's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress, forming the Mahagathbandhan. The alliance handed Prime Minister Narendra Modi his first major state-level setback after coming to power in 2014. However, the political realignment did not last and Nitish returned to the NDA fold in 2017. The NDA faces a strong challenge from the INDIA bloc, with the 2025 elections approaching led in Bihar by Tejashwi Yadav's RJD.
