New Delhi: At least five people were killed and 25 others injured after a bus carrying a wedding party overturned in Jharkhand’s Latehar district on Sunday, police said. The bus was travelling from Balrampur district in Chhattisgarh to Mahuadanr when it met with an accident in the Orsa valley area under Mahuadanr police station limits.
Police said five passengers died on the spot, while the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals. A rescue operation was launched soon after the accident. The exact cause of the mishap is yet to be ascertained and an investigation is underway.
Superintendent of Police Kumar Gaurav said the bus was heading to Mahuadanr for a wedding ceremony when it overturned, leading to multiple casualties. The injured are currently undergoing treatment.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren took cognisance of the incident and directed the district administration to ensure immediate medical care for the injured. In a post on X, he asked officials to provide all necessary assistance to the victims.
Emergency teams reached the spot soon after the accident and shifted the injured to hospitals. Police said efforts were focused on providing prompt medical attention and managing the aftermath of the crash.
Authorities said it was not immediately clear what led to the bus overturning in the hilly Orsa valley stretch. A detailed investigation has been initiated to determine whether speeding, road conditions, or mechanical failure played a role.
The bus accident is the third major road mishap reported in Jharkhand over the last 24 hours. On Saturday night, three people were killed and one injured after a car collided head-on with a truck near Ghasidih village under Deori police station limits.
In another incident in the Jhalakdih area, a motorcycle collided with an e-rickshaw, leaving one person dead and six others injured. The injured were admitted to hospital for further treatment.
