UP law student brutally attacked; head slashed, stomach cut open over money row

New Delhi: A 22-year-old law student from Kanpur is battling for his life after being brutally assaulted with a cleaver, in an incident that has left the city reeling in shock. The victim, identified as Abhijeet Singh Chandel, suffered grave head injuries, multiple deep cuts, and severed fingers during the attack.

According to police sources, the assault occurred around 9 pm on Saturday when Abhijeet, a first-year LLB student at Kanpur University, visited a local medical store to buy medicines. What began as a minor dispute over payment allegedly turned violent after the shop owner, Amar Singh, called in his brother Vijay Singh and two others — Prince Raj Srivastava and Nikhil. The four men reportedly attacked Abhijeet with a sharp-edged weapon, leaving him critically injured on the spot.

Abhijeet’s family members rushed him to the hospital after finding him in a pool of blood. His mother said they tied his protruding intestines with a piece of cloth before taking him to multiple hospitals. However, due to the severity of his wounds, at least four hospitals initially refused to admit him. He was finally taken in by Regency Hospital, where doctors performed an emergency surgery lasting over two hours, stitched 14 deep wounds on his head, and attempted to reattach his severed fingers.

The victim’s mother, Neelam Singh Chandel, accused the attackers of having close ties with local police officials. She claimed that instead of arresting the culprits, the police had filed a false robbery and extortion case against her son to shield the accused. She further alleged that one of them, Prince Raj Srivastava, already faced criminal charges for land grabbing and extortion at Kakadeo police station.

ACP Ranjeet Kumar confirmed that FIRs have been registered from both sides. “We have received complaints from both parties, and the matter is under investigation. Necessary action will be taken once evidence is verified,” he said.

Abhijeet remains in critical condition as doctors continue to monitor his recovery following the gruesome assault.
