Kozhikode: Second phase of Local body polls in Kerala is witnessing higher turnout with poll percentage crossing 25.8 percentage by 11 am.
Polling is underway in more than 12,000 local body wards across seven districts of Kerala, including, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod, in Phase 2 of the 2025 local body elections on Thursday. The elections are being held to elect representatives to municipal corporations, municipalities, gram panchayats, block panchayats and district panchayats.
Voting in Phase 2 of the local body elections comes two days after polling in the first phase were held in 595 local bodies in seven districts, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, and Ernakulam. The counting of votes and declaration of results will take place on December 13. Mattannur municipality in Kannur District will not go to polls this time as the elections are due in September 2027. The State Election Commission (SEC) said it has completed all arrangements to ensure smooth and fair polling across the seven districts.
The outcome of the Kerala local body polls will shape political momentum ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Local body results have often signalled voter mood, verdicts in 2010 and 2015 went against the ruling front, and the Opposition later won the 2011 and 2016 Assembly elections. The 2025 local body polls come a year after the Lok Sabha elections, where the LDF again won only one seat, similar to its 2019 performance.
