Madhya Pradesh shocker: 2 VIT students drown in waterfall while taking selfie

New Delhi: Two students from Madhya Pradesh's Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) drowned at a waterfall in Sehore on SUnday. The deceased are identified as Sanmukh Rao (20) and Hemant Rao(20), both residents of Hyderabad, who were swept away by a stream near a waterfall on Sunday.
The incident took place around 5 pm on Sunday at Bherukho waterfall located in a forest area near Daulatpur village under Ichhawar police station. A group of five friends went on a picnic in the Bherukho Waterfall and Shankar Kund in the Kheoni Wildlife Sanctuary. The other three, namely Narendra, Vamasi and Lalit, did not venture into the water. The police recovered their bodies on Monday.
Pleasurable sightseeing turned horrific
On Sunday, five VIT students went for a picnic at the Kheoni Wildlife Sanctuary. Narendra, Vamasi and Lalit noticed Sanmukh and Hemant diving deep into the water. The three friends, after some time, could not trace Hemant and Sanmukh. They realised that the two had been swept away into the water. The Free Press Journal reported that the 2 students visited the risky spot and tried to take selfies at the spot despite repeated warnings from the district and police administration.
The students then contacted the police, and the force arrived along with the State Disaster Emergency Response Force at the spot immediately. The rescue team had to halt their operation due to the torrential weather in the area. The next morning, after resuming the operation, the rescue team recovered the bodies of Sanmukh and Hemant from Shankar Kund in Dewas district, Sehore superintendent of police Deepak Shukla told the Hindustan Times.
Warning to avoid visit to waterbodies
The police have sent the bodies of the victims for postmortem and have informed their families as well. Also, the district administration has warned the natives of the area to avoid going to ponds, lakes, rivers and so on, as the place is receiving heavy downpour lately. The administration has told citizens to warn their families about the same. Seven lives have been lost due to drowning in Sehore, since last month.
