Double weather shock: Rain and cold hit Maharashtra amid unstable weather patterns

Weather experts predict that the cold conditions will persist, with minimum temperatures expected to remain below normal until Friday. While the unstable weather has disrupted daily life in several states, it has also brought a silver lining for the agricultural sector. Experts believe that the current conditions are favorable for rabi crops, particularly wheat and gram, which thrive in cooler temperatures and adequate soil moisture.

New Delhi: Maharashtra and its adjoining regions are witnessing an unusual weather pattern marked by persistent unseasonal rainfall and an early onset of cold conditions. Over the past few days, several parts of the state have experienced heavy showers even as temperatures have dropped sharply, leaving residents surprised by the simultaneous spell of rain and chill.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), a combination of cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal and cold winds from North India has created a rare climatic mix — with rain continuing in some districts and a cold wave tightening its grip over others, including Dhule and Jeoor, where the minimum temperature has fallen below 10 degree Celcious.

According to the IMD’s latest update, heavy rains are expected in parts of Kerala on November 10, followed by Tamil Nadu on November 12 and 13. Meanwhile, a severe cold wave has been forecast for Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand on November 10 and 11.

Meteorologists initially linked the rains to Cyclone Montha, which had developed in the Bay of Bengal earlier this month. However, despite the cyclone’s weakening, its residual moisture and the ongoing circulation continue to cause prolonged rainfall across several states. Even as of November 10, many areas remain under dense cloud cover with intermittent showers and thunderstorms.

Temperature Drops Across Western and Northern India

The sudden temperature drop is also attributed to recent snowfall in the Himalayas, which has pushed cold winds toward the plains. As a result, North Maharashtra, Mumbai, and nearby regions have seen a noticeable decline in temperatures. On Sunday, Mumbai recorded a minimum temperature of 19 degree Celcious—the lowest so far this season.

With heavy rainfall in the south and cold waves gripping central and northern India, the country finds itself in the midst of a dual weather crisis. The IMD has urged citizens to stay updated with local weather advisories, take necessary precautions, and be prepared for sudden climatic changes over the coming days.
