New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the BJP, after a 57-year-old man allegedly died by suicide in fear of NRC in the state. CM Mamata Banerjee further accused the BJP of indulging in the politics of fear and division.
The deceased, identified as Pradeep Kar,is a resident of Mahajati Nagar in Agarpara. The police discovered the body hanging from the ceiling inside his home. The death note read, "NRC is responsible for my death." It was then sent for post-mortem examination.
'NRC is a venomous propaganda of BJP'
Reacting to the unprecedented incident, Banerjee shared an igneous post on X. She said that the BJP is applying a "venomous propaganda", inflicting fear in the minds of innocent citizens. She further criticised the Centre for injecting fear and pushing people to such an extent that they are taking their lives in their own nation, in the fear of being declared as "foreigners".
The National Register of Citizens(NRC) refers to a register containing the names of all Indian citizens, as mandated by the Citizenship Act of 1955. It documents legal citizens and identifies illegal immigrants. A nationwide NRC has not been conducted since 1951. The process is highly controversial and has led to significant public debate and protest, particularly in the context of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
BJP lashes out
In response,BJP IT chief Amit Malviya accused her of ‘lying and deliberately spreading panic’ to intentionally stoke fear for political gain. According to Malviya, it is the TMC, that weaponised fear — "exploiting the anxieties of poor Hindu refugees who fled religious persecution and sought shelter in India." It is infact the same fear that Bengal witnessed in Sandeskhali and Murshidabad in the past," Malviya further wrote.
The IT cell chief further added that the Bengal CM is petrified of the fact that the proper Special Investigation Report (SIR) would expose the loopholes of the administration and would eventually pave the way to her political downfall. The SIR will also ensure that illegal infiltrators, who double up as TMC’s votebank, are IDENTIFIED and DELETED from the voter list. That’s why she’s resorting to lies and theatrics once again," he said.
