Man divorced with zero alimony celebrates with cake; sparks discussion on Reddit

New Delhi: A Redditor took to social media to share how his friend managed to get divorced without paying a single penny in alimony. The post also featured a picture of a cake that read, "Happily Divorced With 0 Alimony Maintenance." Redditors were quick to jump into a discussion about the incident. 

The Redditor claimed that his friend's ex-wife hit him with three serious cases: Section 498A (dowry harassment), Domestic Violence, and CrPC 125 (maintenance). However, the man did not hire a lawyer and represented himself in court. He also succeeded getting out of the case without having to pay anything in maintenance. 

"Her initial demand was Rs 70 lakh. That came down to Rs 35 lakh within a year. He laughed during mediation, and she dropped it to Rs 30 lakh. He still didn’t budge, and countered with Rs 1 lakh,” said the man on Reddit. Further, the post stated, "He rejected every draft MoU her side proposed, wrote his own, filed the MCD petition, and got divorced on his own terms." 

Soon after the divorce, the man threw a party to celebrate his success. The Redditor further praised the man for battling the 'biased' system. He ended the post by encouraging men to join Men's Rights NGOs and learning to battle the cases by having a thorough understanding of the laws. 

The post garnered mixed comments. Some questioned the Redditor for calling the system 'biased', others lauded him. 

"I’ve heard from several people that lawyers work with each other and the judge to make money off divorces. They collude and from the alimony a part goes to the judge, a part to the wife’s lawyer and a cut even to the husband’s lawyer," said one. Another commented, "It's crazy how zero maintenance is seen as a point of celebration, when ideally she should have been in jail for false accusations."
