Kolkata: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has raised the issue of 767 farmers committing suicide in Maharashtra in the last three months. He posted an X and asked the question, "Till when will farmers commit suicide?"
In Maharashtra's Latur district, a video of an elderly farmer couple ploughing the field themselves has gone viral. The farmer did not have money to buy an ox, so he, along with his wife, started ploughing the field by placing the plough on his shoulders.
The news has been confirmed, and the District Collector of Latur has promised to help these farmers. Actor Sonu Sood has also offered a pair of bulls to this farmer couple. In Maharashtra, the Monsoon session of the Assembly is going on, and the Opposition has raised questions on the state government regarding this video.
Rahul Gandhi took to X and wrote, "Is this just a statistic? No. These are 767 destroyed homes. 767 families who will never be able to recover. And the government? It is silent. It is watching indifferently. Farmers are sinking deeper into debt every day, seeds are expensive, fertilisers are expensive, and diesel is expensive. But there is no guarantee of MSP."
He further wrote, "When they demand loan waivers, they are ignored. But those who have crores of rupees, the Modi government easily waives off their loans. Just look at today's news, Anil Ambani's Rs 48,000 crore SBI's fraud". Modi Ji had said that he would double the income of the farmer, but today the situation is such that the life of the farmer is getting halved. This system is killing farmers, silently, but continuously, and Modi ji is watching the spectacle of his PR."
