Mumbai: 21-year-old pregnant Bangladeshi prisoner flees from JJ hospital

New Delhi: A 21-year-old pregnant Bangladeshi woman fled from Mumbai's JJ hospital, after she was admitted to the hospital on Thursday, due to illness. The Bangladeshi national, who is believed to be five months pregnant, is identified as Rubina Irshad Shaikh, was residing in Mumbai's Vashi for a long time.

The police while conducting a routine crackdown on illegal Bangladeshi nationals in January at Mumbai's Vashi, traced the Bangladeshi family. Shaikh, her mother , two sisters and a brother were booked for illegally residing in India.

The police arrested Shaikh's mother and discovered that she was residing in India from 1998, following her marriage with a man from Jharkhand. On August 7, Rubina was arrested too for her illegal stay in India.

Rubina was admitted to Mumbai's JJ Hospital on August 11 when she started feeling unwell and developed several medical issues such as cold, fever, skin ailments, and pregnancy-related care. On August 14, the woman was taken for a sonography, where she convinced a police constable that she wanted to go to the restroom. Getting the permission, Rubina managed to flee from the hospital, without getting noticed by the police, the Hindustan Times reported.

The police are now conducting a thorough investigation and are coordinating with the Vashi police to get a breakthrough in the case. Subsequently, a case has been registered against Shaikh under section 262. The offence has been registered under sections 262 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful arrest) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

As per the police, Sheikh was among five Bangladeshi nationals, including a minor, arrested by Vashi police for illegally residing in India and possessing forged Indian identity documents. The arrests were carried out, following a tip-off and took place near a public toilet in Juhugaon, Sector 11, Vashi.
