Mumbai: A 32-year-old man allegedly posed as an IAS officer and stayed at a Customs' guesthouse in Mumbai and also used a car with the 'Government of India' written on it, officials said on Monday. The accused, identified as Chandramohan Singh, a resident of Bihar, was arrested. The accused also had fake identity cards of defence and home affairs ministries.
According to police, Singh used to live at the Customs' facility in Bandra and would travel in a vehicle bearing the 'Government of India' number plate by impersonating as an employee of the Ministry of Home Affairs, a police official said. The accused was intercepted by traffic police in Dadar for flouting traffic rules but he managed to escape by claiming he was an IAD officer.
Based on a tip, the accused was tracked down outside a hotel in Mala on Saturday. When stopped, he initially tried to mislead the police by posing as an IAS officer and showing fake identity car. However, during the probe he confessed the documents were forged. He was arrested and a case was filed against him under relevant sections of law, police said.
The police also recovered another document from his possession which claimed that he was working with the Ministry of Defence, he said. Singh's motive behind posing as an IAS officer is yet to be ascertained.
