Mathura: To curb extravagance and unnecessary rituals during weddings, a Muslim community panchayat in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district has imposed a fine of Rs 11,000. It also announced a social boycott of families found violating the norms.
A decision on this was taken at a panchayat, which was organised by the Eidgah Committee in Kosi Kalan town. After the meeting, the committee announced that no nikah ceremony would be organised by Muslim families in hotels, guest houses or marriage halls. The nikah can only be held in mosques. However, a post-marriage feast may be held at hotels or other venues. Banning the use of DJs during weddings, it said that no qazi or imam will perform nikkah if the rules are violated.
Apart from these, the panchayat has also banned the practice of presenting gifts to the groom as well as other practices bursting of firecrackers. Issuing further clarification, the panchayat said that DJs will be allowed only when the wedding procession goes to another city. It was observed that dancing at weddings often leads to arguments and fights, news agency PTI reported.
Adding further, the community panchayatsaid that those found violating these rules will have to pay a fine of Rs 11,000, as well as social boycott. Similar decisions will also be implemented in other cities, it added.
As per community elders, the main motive behind the decision is to cut down on wedding expenses and curb social evils. The decision will also likely prevent disputes during wedding reduce financial burden on families. Among those who were present at the panchayat meeting included committee secretary, Mehraraj Qureshi.
