Thiruvananthapuram: Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, whose statements in recent times have put him in defensive mode, said on Monday that he never drifted away from the line taken by the party. The former Union minister said that on most matters, he and the party were in the same line.

‘The party and I have stood on the same line’

Speaking to reporters, after attending the meeting of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) to discuss strategies for upcoming Assembly elections, he added as per PTI, “My question is, who said that I left the party line. Even when I expressed my opinions on various subjects, on most matters, the party and I have stood on the same line.”

Questions clearly directed in one direction: Tharoor

He observed that his questions directed at ministers during Parliamentary debates were on clear directions and the party did not have any issues with it. “When I ask whether people have read what I actually wrote, most have not. After reading the full text, they realise the real issue,” Tharoor added further.

When asked whether the issues started after he contested the Congress presidential polls, he noted, ““I contested and lost. The chapter ended there. I don’t see any story in it. In the party’s history, many elections have been held,, and many have been won and lost.”

Congress leader on defending Advani

The Congress leader, when asked about defending veteran BJP leader LK Advani, said it was a courtesy for the former Deputy Prime Minister on his 98th birthday. “Our culture teaches us to respect elders, and that is what I did,” he said further.

Tharoor, on being asked whether MPs would contest Kerala Assembly polls, added that while a few of them are interested, the decision lies on the Congress leadership. “I speak and write for people who migrate to other States and countries in search of a future,” he added further.
