New Delhi: A viral Instagram clip capturing a family’s visible disappointment after the birth of a third daughter has triggered widespread anger online, with criticism extending beyond the family to the doctor present in the video.

Video sparks gender bias debate

The short video, which many viewers say exposes a deeply ingrained gender bias, shows the moment the baby’s gender is announced. As the doctor shares the news, the aunt’s expression reportedly drops, a reaction that unsettled many watching the clip. What further fuelled the backlash was the doctor’s response, where she is heard saying, “Ab kya hi kar sakte hai? (What else can you do after this.)”

For many social media users, the remark appeared to downplay or normalise the family’s disappointment rather than challenge it.

Social media outrage grows

As the video spread rapidly across platforms, it drew a wave of emotional and angry reactions. Users voiced concern not only for the newborn girl, but also for the social and emotional environment she may grow up in.

“The sadness isn’t the child’s birth, it’s the bias she’s born into,” wrote one user, a comment that resonated widely online.

Doctor’s response draws sharp criticism

Several commenters said the most disturbing aspect of the clip was the doctor’s conduct. As a medical professional—and a woman—many expected her to confront the visible prejudice instead of attempting to soften the family’s reaction.

One Instagram user commented, “Doctor is the biggest red flag here. She is consoling that family as if she is delivering bad news. I cannot foresee the trauma the new mother is going to go through.”

Others shared similar concerns, arguing that such responses reinforce harmful social attitudes instead of challenging them. Many also questioned the potential impact of such moments on the mental health of the new mother, who had just delivered a child while witnessing her family’s disappointment firsthand.
