Over 2,900 violent incidents against religious minorities reported in Bangladesh under Yunus regime

Under the Yunus regime, Bangladesh has witnessed an alarming surge in violence against religious minorities. Over 2,900 incidents, including murders, sexual assaults, and attacks on places of worship and homes, were reported since August 2024. Data from BHBCUC highlights systematic persecution, with continued hostilities reflecting a grave human rights crisis affecting vulnerable communities.

New Delhi: Atrocities, hostilities, and crimes targeting religious minorities in Bangladesh have been growing at an alarming rate under the Yunus regime. Murder of two Hindus has been reported in the last 24 hours. The back-to-back killings have pushed the death toll of Hindus to 6 in just 18 days.

Amid the surge in violence, India's Ministry of External Affairs has said that there is “unremitting hostility” against religious  minority groups and that “over 2,900 violent incidents” against minority communities have taken place since the interim government came to power in August 2024.

Startling data paints a grim picture

The data on communal violence and the persecution of religious and ethnic minorities in Bangladesh, released by the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council (BHBCUC), reveals that from​ August 4, 2024 to August 20, 2024, as many as 2,010 such incidents of hostilities were recorded.

A total of 9 murders and 4 cases of violence against women -- rape and gang rape -- were recorded during this period. As many as 915 cases of attacks on houses or looting or arson/vandalism also occured. Besides, 69 incidents of attacks on places of worship were recorded. There were 953 reported incidents of attacks on businesses, including looting, arson, and vandalism.

Between August 21 and December 31, 2024, a total of 174 incidents were reported. The data shows that 23 murders or killings were committed, while 9 cases of violence against women, including rape and gang rape, were reported during this period. As many as 64 incidents of attack in places of worship were registered. The data reveals that 38 incidents were reported of attacks on houses and businesses. Many of these were vandalised, looted or set on fire. A total of 15 cases of arrest and torture for alleged blasphemy were reported.

Minorities living under fear

From January 1, 2025 to June 30, 2025, 258 such incidents against religious minorities were reported. During this period, there were 27 murders and 20 cases of violence against women, including rape and gangrape. Around 59 incidents of attacks on places of worship took place. The number of cases involving attacks on homes and businesses stood at 87. There were 21 cases of arrest and torture linked to alleged blasphemy.

Between July 1, 2025 and October 30, 2025, a total of 181 incidents were recorded. These included 18 cases of murder or suspicious death, 28 cases of temple or idol vandalism, 16 cases of blasphemy, harassment, or threats, and 10 cases of sexual assault. There were 4 cases of abduction and 24 cases of land grabbing and eviction. As many as 37 thefts and lootings and 31 cases of physical assaults were recorded. In October 2025 alone, the number of violent incidents against minorities stood at 50.

From November 1, 2025 to December 28, 2025, total incidents recorded were 19. The incidents recorded included 7 cases of murder (including 1 related to blasphemy) and 5 cases of looting, robbery, or vandalism.

Against such a backdrop, religious minorities in Bangladesh continue to live under constant fear. The spiral of violence, intimidation, and targeted attacks stalk them. The unrelenting climate of insecurity persists. The hostilities have robbed the communities of a sense of safety.
