Lahore: Taking an u-turn, Pakistan has put off its decision to deport Sarabjeet Kaur, a woman from India’s Punjab, who reached the neighbouring country last year. After reaching Pakistan, the woman reportedly converted to Islam and got married there.
The deportation could not be carried out, despite arrangements having been made on both sides of the border. The latest development has led to fresh questioning over her legal status and on what conditions she continues to stay in Pakistan.
While her deportation was stopped at the last moment, no official explanation regarding the matter has been made so far. According to reports appearing in the Pakistani media, documents related issued might be the reason behind the decision.
Sarabjeet Kaur, who is 48-year-old left for Pakistan along with a delegation that was visiting the country to celebrate Guru Nanak Jayanti. However, after reaching there, she left the delegation, converted, and then got married to a Pakistani man identified as Nasir Hussain. She also adopted the name Noor Hussain. She has been living in Pakistan since then.
Speaking to news agency PTI on November 16, a police official said, “Kaur contracted marriage with Nasir Hussain of Sheikhupura district, some 50 kms from Lahore, a day after she arrived in Pakistan on November 4 and declared that she converted to Islam and married out of free will.” “The couple has gone into hiding, and police are searching for them,” the official had further said.
Notably, the sudden decision to halt her deportation has lead to questions on how the process would now continue. The case has come to notice at a time when both countries are having strained relationship, which increased further after the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed on April 22 last year.
