People didnt elect you to destroy property: Om Birla issues stern warning to Opposition MPs

The Parliament's Monsoon Session has been marred by continuous opposition protests against the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar and allegations of vote theft. Amid such a situation, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has issued a warning.

New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has slammed Opposition MPs who are protesting fiercely with slogans and placards against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and allegations of vote theft against the ECI and the BJP. He said, "The people have not elected you to destroy government property," and warned of taking stringent measures against them for violating the rules.

The ongoing Monsoon Session of the Parliament is going to end on August 21. Through the session, there have been several protests and adjournments as the MPs from the Opposition camp, including its leader Rahul Gandhi, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and supremo of the Samajwadi Party, Akhilesh Yadav, have protested against the ECI's SIR in Bihar and demanded a debate over the issue, something the Centre has rejected so far.

Om Birla slammed the sloganeering Opposition MPs and said to invest the energy for the benefit of the common people. He said, "It will be beneficial for the people of the country."

He issued a stern warning to the protesting MPs and said, "If you try to destroy government property, I will have to make some decisive decisions, and the people of the country will see you. Action has been taken against members for such incidents in many assemblies. I warn you again. Do not try to destroy government property. This is my request to you."

Meanwhile, the opposition INDIA BLOC is reportedly planning to propose an impeachment motion against Gyanesh Kumar, the Chief Election Commissioner. Notably, Rahul Gandhi had accused the poll body of perpetrating widespread voter fraud. It was decided at a meeting hosted by Mallikarjun Kharge for the INDIA Bloc leaders that an impeachment motion would be brought against Kumar.
