PM Modi honoured with various awards worldwide in recognition of various contributions | A full list

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has received several prestigious awards since 2014 from across the globe in recognition of his contributions to strengthening India's global ties and his contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

New Delhi: Ever since assuming office in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been bestowed with a number of awards in several countries across the globe. Among the countries that have honored him include, the United States, Russia, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Afghanistan. 

He has been honoured not only for further improving India’s ties with other countries but also for the role India played during the Covid pandemic during his leadership. Notably, India had sent a large quantity of vaccines and medicines when the entire world, including India, was engulfed under the pandemic, the latest being by the Barbados Government in March this year.

It may be noted that apart from other countries, several Muslim nations have also bestowed PM Modi with the highest honours of their countries. This is even as the Opposition in India has quite often accused him and the ruling BJP of being ‘anti- Muslims’. Among the European countries, the Prime Minister has also been honoured by Russia, France, and Greece among others

Top honours of PM Modi

1) Honorary Order of Freedom of Barbados

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honoured  'Honorary Order of Freedom of Barbados'. Issuing s statement in March this year, the Ministry of External Affairs (MHA) said that the award was collected on his behalf by  Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles, Pabitra Margherita at a ceremony in Bridgetown. The Barbados Government announced the award late last year.

 2) Order of Excellence

The Guyana Government honoured PM modi with Guyana’s Order of Excellence for its efforts in strengthening ties between the two nations and his contributions during the Covid pandemic. The award was conferred upon him in November last year by President Irfaan Ali.

3) Dominica Award of Honour

The same year, the Dominica Government also honoured PM Modi with the Dominica Award of Honour for his contributions to taking ties between both countries to further heights.

4) Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger

The Nigeria Government awarded its second highest award, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, in 2024. The Prime Minister was honoured in recognition of his contribution towards India-Nigeria relations.

5) Order of St Andrew

In July last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin honoured PM, Narendra Modi, with the e Order of St Andrew for the latter’s contributions to India-Russia ties. Notably, India has not openly criticised Russia during its ongoing war with Ukraine and urged Moscow to start dialogues with Kyiv. 

6) Order of the Druk Gyalpo

The Butan Government honoured PM Modi with the Order of the Druk Gyalpo in March 2024. The highest civilian award in the country, he was honoured for his contribution towards India-Bhutan ties. He was the first leader from the foreign soil to receive the award. 

7) Grand Cross of the Order of Honour

The Government of Greece under President Katerina N Sakellaropoulou honoured PM, Narendra Modi, with the Grand Cross of the Order of Honour in recognition of his diplomatic contributions in 2023.

8) Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the first Indian PM on July 13, 2023,  to receive the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour from the French Government. This is the highest award in France. 

9) Order of the Nile

Egyptian President  Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was honored with the Order of the Nile in 2023, to honor PM Modi’s contribution to global peace and cooperation.

10) Grand Companion of the Order of Logohu

 Papua New Guinea’s governor-general Bob Dadae honoured PM Narendra Modi with e Grand Companion of the Order of Logohu in 2023, in recognition of his work in strengthening India’s relations with the Pacific countries.

11) Legion of Merit

In 2020, the US honoured PM Modi with the Legion of Merit, the country’s highest military honours. He was honoured for his contribution towards bilateral ties between India and the US.

12) King Hamad Order of the Renaissance

The Bahrain Government honoured PM Modi with King Hamad Order of the Renaissance in 2019 for his role in strengthening ties between India and Bahrain.

13) Order of Zayed 

PM Modi was awarded the Order of Zayed by the UAE Government in 2019, in recognition of his contribution to bilateral relations between both countries.

14) Rule of Nishan Izzuddeen

The Maldivian government honoured PM Modi with the Rule of Nishan Izzuddeen, the country’s highest honour in 2019.

15) Grand Collar of the State of Palestine 

In 2018, PM Modi was honoured with Palestine’s Grand Collar for his contributions to India-Palestine relations.

16) King Abdulaziz Sash 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was presented with Saudi Arabia’s King Abdulaziz Sash, award in 2016 by King Salman bin Abdulaziz.
