New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday embarked on a trip to South Africa. In his 3-day visit, he is scheduled to attend the G20 Summit. The Summit is being held in Johannesburg. This is the first G20 Summit being held in that country.
The PM will also be taking part in the sixth IBSA Summit, on the sidelines of the G20 meeting. In his departure statement, the PM said, "I will present India’s perspective at the Summit in line with our vision of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ and 'One earth, One Family and One future’"
This is the fourth consecutive time that the G20 Summit is being held in the Global South. The last 3 Summits were hosted by Brazil in 2024, India in 2023 and Indonesia in 2022. PM Modi is expected to speak at all 3 sessions of the Summit.
Talking about the PM's visit to Africa, the Ministry of External Affairs said, "On the margins of the G20 Leaders' Summit, the prime minister is expected to hold bilateral meetings with some of the leaders present in Johannesburg. The prime minister will also be participating in the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Leaders' Meeting being hosted by South Africa."
The 3 sessions of the Summit this year are, "Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Growth Leaving No One Behind: Building our economies, the role of trade, financing for development and the debt burden", ""A Resilient World – the G20’s Contribution: Disaster Risk Reduction, Climate Change, Just Energy Transitions, Food Systems" and "A Fair and a Just Future for All: Critical Minerals; Decent Work; Artificial Intelligence."
This is PM Modi's fourth visit to South Africa. In 2016, he had a bilateral visit to the country, later he attended 2 BRICS Summit there in 2018 and in 2023.
