Redditor rants about rising rentals in Mumbai
"I’m relocating to Mumbai this month, and the cost of housing has honestly left me stunned. Rs 42,000 seems to be the starting point, and that’s for older properties! One of the brokers literally laughed when I told him my budget was Rs 35-38k," said the individual on the platform. He concluded the post by asking users if they were missing out on something.
The user also asked Redditors if they were overlooking any particular area. Netizens were quick to suggest areas and share their thoughts. "With auto and bus issues and traffic, I feel one should not move outwards. Being near a railway station helps," said one. Many told the Redditor not to rely completely on brokers. Another person commented, "Depends on locality and society. Move a bit outwards and don’t believe brokers." Some individuals shared how they found a place in the city.
A third Redditor shared, "I'm in Goregaon West. I pay 43k for a 2BHK in a semi-old standalone building. Surprised 1 BHK won't come in 38. Have you tried no broker? At least you'd save the brokerage."
One person explained, "During COVID, people left rental apartments and purchases of investment houses fell sharply. Post-COVID people suddenly realised the value of larger houses, and many societies are voting for redevelopment. The current administration is also supporting the redevelopment of existing societies, as there is no available land for new development. So there is a situation where a fresh supply is yet to come in."
