The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear petitions today challenging Kerala’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. This comes after both the Kerala government and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) sought intervention from the apex court.
The Kerala government has argued that proceeding with the SIR concurrently with ongoing local body elections would place undue strain on available personnel and disrupt essential government functions.
A bench, headed by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, had previously assured that the matter would be listed for todays hearing. The IUML, whose plea was urgently listed on Wednesday, also submitted that carrying out the SIR during an election period would create significant practical difficulties on the ground and could interfere with established polling arrangements.
Advocate Haris Beeran, representing the IUML, presented this concern to the bench. The state government approached the Supreme Court after the Kerala High Court declined to entertain its writ petition seeking a postponement of the SIR exercise.
