New Delhi: In good news for the Indian semiconductor industry, Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek has said it is ready to manufacture its chips in India, according to a report by the Times of India.

Why is this news massive?

Well, MediaTek is one of the biggest players in the world when it comes to semiconductor chips. Its client list includes global smartphone majors like Samsung, Xiaomi, and Oppo. It designs and develops chipsets for millions of devices sold all over the world. It focuses on chip design and software development and outsources the actual manufacturing process.

Anku Jain, Managing Director of MediaTek India, told TOI, "If consumption is in India and manufacturing is in India, that’s good for us. It makes business sense, certainly it’s a good thing to do. Things can be done to Make in India."

India aims to become one of the biggest semiconductor manufacturing hubs in the world, with the government providing a $10-billion incentive package. It wants global chipmakers to come here and create a domestic supply chain to support India's quickly expanding electronics industry. Notably, despite India being one of the largest consumers of electronic goods in the world, it imports almost all of its semiconductor requirements, something the government is trying to change.
