Chennai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of weather alerts for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next several days as a low-pressure system intensifies over the Bay of Bengal. The Met Department has specifically placed Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpattu under a heavy rain warning for January 10, with an orange alert already in effect for several Delta districts on January 9.
Tamil Nadu weather report: Weather system in BoB intensifying rapidly
According to the IMD, the upper air cyclonic circulation over the equatorial Indian Ocean has now consolidated into a deep low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal as of 5:30 AM today. The system is expected to intensify further into a depression within the next 24 hours and continue moving west-northwestward over the southwest Bay of Bengal in the subsequent 48 hours.
This development is likely to significantly activate the Northeast Monsoon over Tamil Nadu's coastal and northern regions.
