Tamil Nadu weather update: Delta districts on heavy rain alert, temperature to drop by 2-3°C

Chennai: The Chennai Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory forecasting heavy rainfall in several Delta and coastal districts of Tamil Nadu from January 8 onward, triggered by an upper air cyclonic circulation over the central South Bay of Bengal. The department also warned of a gradual drop in minimum temperatures and possible frost in the Nilgiris and Kodaikanal hills.

According to the detailed forecast, dry weather is expected to prevail across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on January 5 and 6, with light fog in isolated areas during the early morning. A change is anticipated from January 7, when light to moderate rain may occur in a few coastal areas.

Heavy Rainfall Alert for Key DistrictsThe intensity of rainfall is expected to increase significantly from January 8 to 10. Heavy rainfall is likely in one or two places in the following regions:

  • January 8–9: Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, and Karaikal.
  • January 10: Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

The rains are expected to be accompanied by thunder and lightning in some areas.

Drop in Temperature and Frost Warning

Residents should also prepare for cooler nights. From today until January 7, minimum temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal may drop by 2–3°C below normal. A frost warning has been issued for January 5 and 6 in one or two places in the Nilgiris district and the Kodaikanal hilly areas of Dindigul district during the night and early morning hours.

Chennai Weather Forecast

In the capital, partly cloudy skies with light morning fog are predicted. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 29–30°C, with minimums between 21–22°C over the next two days.

Authorities have advised farmers in the Delta regions to take necessary precautions for standing crops and have urged residents in hilly areas to protect against the cold. The weather department will continue to monitor the systems over the Bay of Bengal and update forecasts accordingly.
