Pongal special trains to run between Chennai, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi from Jan 12–20

Chennai: In a welcome move for festival-bound passengers, Southern Railway has announced the operation of 10 additional special trains ahead of Pongal, to accommodate the surge in travel demand. With Pongal falling on January 15, these trains will connect major destinations like Tirunelveli (Nellai), Tambaram, Chengalpattu, Chennai Central, and Thoothukudi. Ticket booking for these services begins today.

The special trains are scheduled to run between January 12 and January 20, catering to passengers traveling to their hometowns and back after the celebrations.

  • aNellai–Tambaram Superfast Special: Departs Tirunelveli at 3:45 AM on January 13 & 20, reaching Tambaram at 2:00 PM the same day.
  • Tambaram–Nellai Return Special: Departs Tambaram at 3:00 PM on the same dates, arriving in Tirunelveli at 2:00 AM the next day.
  • Nellai–Chengalpattu Superfast Special: Departs Tirunelveli at 3:45 AM on January 14, reaching Chengalpattu at 1:15 PM.
  • Chengalpattu–Nellai Return Special: Departs Chengalpattu at 3:30 PM on the same day.
  • Nellai–Tambaram Special (Night Service): Departs Tirunelveli at 12:30 AM on January 12 & 19, arriving at Tambaram at 1:30 PM.
  • Tambaram–Nellai Return (Night Service): Departs Tambaram at 4:40 PM on the same dates, reaching Tirunelveli at 8:00 AM the following day.
  • Chennai Central–Thoothukudi Special: Departs Chennai Central at 11:50 PM on January 12 & 19, arriving in Thoothukudi at 12:15 PM the next day.
  • Thoothukudi–Chennai Central Return Special: Departs Thoothukudi at 5:50 PM on January 13 & 20 for Chennai Central.

These additions come after the regular trains had reached full capacity, reinforcing Southern Railway’s efforts to manage the seasonal rush. Passengers are advised to book their tickets promptly through the IRCTC website, mobile app, or reservation counters.
