Tamil Nadu weather report: IMD issues 3-day heavy rain alert, Chennai on Jan 10-11

Private weather forecaster Pradeep John echoed the wet outlook, noting that rain is likely in Tamil Nadu from January 9 to 14. He highlighted that while Tamil Nadu's average January rainfall is 12.3 mm, the state has already received 7.8 mm until January 5 and may exceed the average this year.

Chennai: The deep depression currently over the south-eastern Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a depression today, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a multi-day heavy rainfall alert for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The system is likely to move west-northwest towards the southwest Bay of Bengal over the next 48 hours, triggering significant rainfall from January 9 to 11.

According to the IMD:

  • January 7–8: Moderate rainfall is expected across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
  • January 9 (Orange Alert): Very heavy rainfall is predicted in Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, and Pudukkottai. Heavy rainfall is likely in Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Tiruchirappalli, Ariyalur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, and Puducherry.
  • January 10: Very heavy rainfall is forecast for Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, and Puducherry. Heavy rainfall is expected in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai.
  • January 11: Heavy rainfall is likely in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, and Puducherry.

The IMD has also warned of squally winds up to 60 kmph over the coastal areas of southern Tamil Nadu, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Comorin Sea on January 7–8.
