Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has formally launched the ambitious Chennai Global Sports City project, inviting tenders for the design, engineering, procurement, and construction of a world-class sports complex on 105 acres in Semmancheri. The project, set to rise on government land worth approximately ₹2,010 crore recently reclaimed from encroachment, aims to position Tamil Nadu as an international sports destination.
The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has called for bids to prepare a techno-economic feasibility report for the integrated sports city, which will be located near Sathyabama University on the IT corridor of Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR).
Chennai Global Sports City: Land Reclaimed from Jeppiaar Group
The site holds significant backstory. The land—91.04 acres of the total 105 acres—was reclaimed by the state government on September 18, 2021, after a court confirmed encroachment by the Jeppiaar Educational Group, which runs St. Joseph’s College. The reclaimed parcel, valued at around ₹2,010 crore, will now be transformed into a state-of-the-art sports infrastructure hub.
Vision and DesignAs revealed in a recently released conceptual model, the Chennai Global Sports City is envisioned to rival global facilities. The design includes:
The design has already generated excitement on social media, with one user remarking that the complex looks fit to host the Olympics or Asian Games.
Building on Sporting Momentum
The project aligns with the state government’s focus on sports, following the successful hosting of the Chess Olympiad and the Chennai Open WTA tennis tournament. The government has also launched several initiatives to train Tamil Nadu athletes for national and international competitions.
The sports city is intended to host international tournaments and serve as a high-performance training center for athletes. Construction is expected to begin soon after the tendering and feasibility processes are completed.
