Tamil Nadu CM Stalin launches Anbu Karangal scheme: Monthly financial aid for orphaned children
The Tamil Nadu government's "Anbu Karangal" scheme has been designed to assist children who have faced profound personal loss. It specifically targets two categories: those who have lost both parents and are being raised by relatives or guardians, and those who have lost one parent and are unable to receive care from the surviving parent.
Chennai: In a significant welfare initiative, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin officially launched the "Anbu Karangal” (Caring Hands) scheme today. The program aims to provide sustained financial and educational support to children across the state who have lost one or both parents and lack adequate care. The scheme will offer a monthly scholarship of Rs 2,000 to eligible beneficiaries, helping them continue their schooling without interruption until the age of 18 or completion of Class 12.
The announcement was made during a launch event held at the Kalaivanar Arangam in Chennai. The initiative falls under the government’s broader "Illam Thedi Kalvi” (Education at Home) mission, which seeks to ensure equitable access to education and holistic development for all children in Tamil Nadu, particularly those from economically and socially vulnerable backgrounds.
Anbu Karangal Scheme: Eligibility and Extended Support for Higher Education
The "Anbu Karangal” scheme has been designed to assist children who have faced profound personal loss. It specifically targets two categories: those who have lost both parents and are being raised by relatives or guardians, and those who have lost one parent and are unable to receive care from the surviving parent. In addition to the monthly stipend for school education, the government has also pledged support for higher education and skill development. Students who complete their Class 12 and gain admission to colleges or vocational courses will remain eligible for assistance.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister may also provide laptops to such students to facilitate their higher studies, ensuring they have the tools needed to succeed in their academic and professional pursuits. This comprehensive approach underscores the state’s commitment to empowering orphaned and semi-orphaned children through education and financial stability.
