Chennai: Two potent weather systems over the Bay of Bengal have intensified, with one strengthening into a deep depression and another low-pressure area forming off the Sri Lankan coast, leading to heavy rainfall and triggering precautionary school holidays in parts of southern Tamil Nadu. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of further intensification, keeping the region on high alert.
The depression over the Strait of Malacca has now intensified into a deep depression, as predicted by the IMD. The system is currently moving in a west-northwesterly direction and is expected to strengthen further. While the IMD's latest update states it will "strengthen further," previous forecasts had indicated a potential for it to develop into a cyclonic storm, a possibility that remains under close watch.
Simultaneously, a new low-pressure area has formed over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, off the coast of South Sri Lanka and the Indian Ocean. This system is also expected to intensify into a depression and is the primary driver of the immediate heavy rainfall being experienced in the southern districts. The IMD has forecast heavy rains today in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli (Nellai), Thoothukudi, and Ramanathapuram districts due to this system's influence.
In response to the continuous heavy rainfall lashing Rameswaram since morning, the Ramanathapuram district administration has taken proactive measures for student safety. The District Collector has officially declared a one-day holiday for all schools in Rameswaram today. The order was issued considering the welfare of the students and the persistent downpour caused by the low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.
