Tamil Nadu weather update: Heavy rain alert for 5 districts including Chennai today
Tamil Nadu weather forecast: Today, light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely to occur in many places over coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal areas, and in a few places over interior Tamil Nadu.
Chennai: The deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal crossed the Sri Lankan coast near Mullaitivu between 3:30 PM and 4:30 PM IST on Saturday, the Chennai Meteorological Department said. As the system moves westwards and weakens into a low-pressure area, it is expected to bring heavy rainfall to five districts in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, today.
The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall at one or two places in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Cuddalore, and Villupuram districts, as well as Puducherry, today. While parts of Thiruvarur and Tirunelveli (Nellai) have already experienced rains, the northern coastal belt is now on alert.

Similarly, Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Pudukkottai districts, and in the Karaikal region. Heavy rainfall is also likely at one or two places in Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Sivaganga, and Ramanathapuram districts, and in Puducherry today.
The weather department added that moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning is likely at a few places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from Sunday (January 11) until January 16, indicating an extended wet spell.
