Shocking electricity bills? Tamil Nadus new verification system will now check before charging

TNEB new billing system: The revamped system will introduce pre-billing verification for unusually high charges. If a household that typically receives a bill between ₹500–₹2,500 suddenly gets a ₹10,000–₹15,000 demand, the software will flag it before generating the bill.

Chennai: In a major consumer-friendly initiative, the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) is set to implement a new verification system for electricity bills. The move comes as a relief to lakhs of consumers who have long suffered from sudden, inexplicable spikes in their power bills. The new system aims to verify abnormal readings before bills are generated, putting an end to the current practice where consumers have to pay first and dispute later.

Under the existing system, once meter readings are entered into the billing software, the amount gets automatically uploaded to the consumer's account regardless of its accuracy. This has led to numerous instances where households receiving normal bills of ₹500-₹2,500 suddenly get slapped with ₹10,000-₹15,000 charges, forcing them to go through a tedious complaint process for corrections.

The new system will introduce a crucial safety check. When the billing software detects an unusually high consumption pattern - typically 3-4 times the average bill - it will flag the reading instead of immediately generating a bill. A commercial inspector will then be dispatched to physically verify the meter reading at the consumer's premises. Only after confirmation will the bill be processed, ensuring consumers don't have to pay incorrect amounts upfront. TNEB officials say the software development for this system is already underway.

Smart Meter Rollout and Faster Connections

Complementing the billing reforms, TNEB is preparing for a massive procurement drive of 3 crore smart meters across Tamil Nadu. The board has already released a list of approved manufacturers, enabling consumers to purchase meters directly rather than waiting for the board's supply. After purchase, consumers need to submit the meters to Tangedco for tamper-proofing before installation on a first-come, first-served basis.

This shift from board-managed procurement to consumer-driven purchases aims to address the chronic shortage of meters that has been delaying new electricity connections. As part of the efficiency drive, TNEB has committed to providing new connections within three days of application. The smart meter initiative, coupled with the new verification system, is expected to significantly improve billing accuracy and consumer satisfaction across the state.

The reforms come at a time when complaints about erratic billing and prolonged disputes have been rising steadily. TNEB officials emphasize that these measures will enhance transparency and accountability in the power distribution system while reducing unnecessary financial burden on consumers. While the new verification system will be implemented shortly, the smart meter rollout is expected to begin in the coming weeks.
