Hyderabad: The official residence of the Governor, Raj Bhavan, Telangana, has been renamed as Lok Bhavan, as per a statement by the Press Secretary.
This has been done to reiterate the strength and vibrancy of our democratic values as we march with confidence towards a Viksit Bharat. The new nomenclature, Lok Bhavan, Telangana, comes into immediate effect, the statement read.
MHA directive to secretaries of Governors and Lt Governors:
The change of name follows a directive from Ministry of Home Affairs, to shed the nomenclature related to colonial era.
The directive addressed to all principal secretaries, secretaries to the Governors of all states read, “In the conference of Governors, 2024, it was suggested to rename ‘Raj Bhavans’ as ‘Lok Bhavans’ as the word ‘Raj Bhavan’ smacks of colonialism. It is requested to the offices of Governors and offices of Lt Governors may be named as ‘Lok Bhavan’ or ‘Lok Niwas’ for official purposes.”
It comes after the Raj Bhavans of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Assam, Kerala, Tripura and Odisha have been renamed as Lok Bhavans.
Name changes in Delhi:
Several iconic places in the national capital have been renamed over the last few years. Earlier, Raj Path became Kartavya Path while the Prime Minister's official residence was renamed from Seven Race Course to Lok Kalyan Marg in 2016.
