New Delhi: A viral video on social media captured an army jawan pinned to a lamp post and beaten by toll plaza workers in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut city. Following the assault on the soldier, Meerut villagers attacked the toll booth on Monday. Additionally, the National Highway Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has imposed a fine of Rs 20 lakh and initiated the process to cancel the license of the toll operator.
The incident reportedly took place on Sunday night at Bhuni Toll Plaza in the Sarurpur police station area.
The video clip captures several toll plaza workers brutally assaulting the soldier and even attacking him with a brick. The victim identified as Kapil Kavad, was travelling to Delhi airport, along with his cousin, to resume his duty in Srinagar.
As per the reports, the soldier, posted in Jammu and Kashmir, approached the toll plaza on the Karnal Highway, a discord over the traffic jam and toll fee reportedly escalated into a brutal assault. Unable to control their rage, staff thrashed Kapil with kicks, punches, and sticks. At one point, an individual can be seen lifting a brick.
The police claimed that Kapil came to meet his family on a vacation, and was returning to duty in Srinagar to resume duty. The dispute took place in Bhuni Toll Plaza, which had a long line of vehicles. Kapil aimed to reach the airport soon and conveyed his situation to the toll employees. But the situation took an unexpected turn and the toll started thrashing the jawan to kill him.
The police have registered a case against the four accused and arrested them. Also, a team is reviewing the CCTV footage to arrest more individuals responsible for the incident.
Following the incident, a large number of locals took to the road in protest. So far, six individuals have been arrested in connection with the assault and ensuing violence.
