Uttarakhand weather update: Orange and yellow alerts in 8 districts; heavy rain, thunderstorm likely till Sept 20

The Uttarakhand Meteorological Department has issued orange and yellow alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in several districts, effective till September 20. People are advised to stay alert as the weather continues to fluctuate across the state with landslides and road closures reported.

Dehradun: The Rain in Uttarakhand doesn’t seem to stop even in the middle of September, prompting the Meteorological Department to issue an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorm accompanied by lightning across multiple districts.

The alert is valid through September 20, with the possibility of intense to very intense spells of rain posing risks of landslides, road blockages, and flooding in low-lying areas.

According to the Meteorological Department, Dehradun, Bageshwar, Champawat, and Nainital are under an orange alert today, with heavy rainfall expected at isolated places. An additional orange alert has been issued for Chamoli and Pauri Garhwal in the Garhwal region, and Pithoragarh and Udham Singh Nagar in the Kumaon region.

Meanwhile, a yellow alert has been sounded for heavy rain and thunderstorms in Pauri, Chamoli, Udham Singh Nagar, Pithoragarh, and other remaining districts. The entire state is likely to experience lightning and intense rainfall at isolated places.

Landslides and roadblocks continue to hamper normal life in the state

The current weather pattern is already impacting normal life. On Sunday, a three-hour roadblock occurred on the Rishikesh-Gangotri Highway near Silwan and Plasda in the Narendra Nagar area, caused by debris triggered by heavy rain. Traffic resumed only after extensive efforts by a JCB machine deployed by the National Highway Authority.

In Barkot, a 200-meter road section between Phulchatti and Kharsali collapsed, halting movement. Authorities have initiated the construction of a temporary footpath to facilitate the Yamunotri Dham Yatra. In Madrasu, Vikas Nagar, the mountain has developed cracks, and continuous falling stones and debris have put Maidan village and surrounding areas at risk, causing panic among residents.

Waterlogging in Rishikesh at multiple places

Dehradun witnessed fluctuating weather with rain in the morning and a sudden heavy downpour in the evening. Waterlogging was reported in Rishikesh, particularly in the Municipal Corporation, Muni Ki Reti, and surrounding rural areas. Overflowing drains caused water to enter several homes, adding to the residents' woes.

Alert till September 20

The IMD has extended its alert till September 20, predicting varying intensities of rainfall in different regions. On September 16, heavy rain is expected in Dehradun, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh. Rainfall will likely continue in Dehradun and Bageshwar on September 17. Light to moderate rain is expected across most districts between September 18 and 20.

Residents and tourists are advised to remain cautious

With monsoon activity projected to weaken next week, residents and tourists are advised to remain cautious, avoid travel in vulnerable areas, and stay updated with local weather bulletins. Authorities are on high alert, and disaster response teams have been kept ready to deal with emergencies arising due to rain-related disruptions. Travelers to hill stations and pilgrimage routes are urged to monitor official advisories.
