Dehradun: The Meteorological Centre has predicted light rain and snowfall in Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh districts today. Areas above 2,800 meters are most likely to receive snowfall.
On Thursday, the first day of the year, snowfall was reported in Chamoli’s Niti Malari valley, Badrinath Dham, and Hemkund Sahib. The fresh snow has lowered temperatures and created excitement among tourists. Many visitors are camping in Auli and Niti Malari valley, waiting for heavier snowfall in the coming days.
Fog alert in plains
While the mountains prepare for snow, the plains are struggling with dense fog. A yellow alert has been issued for fog in Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, and Champawat districts.
On Thursday morning, light fog was seen in several areas. Due to poor visibility, eight flights to Dehradun were delayed, and train schedules were also affected.
Air quality concerns
The dry weather has worsened air quality in Uttarakhand. Dehradun’s AQI crossed 300, placing it in the “very poor” category. This has caused difficulties for asthma and respiratory patients, and even children are facing health problems. Experts say rainfall and snowfall could help improve air quality by reducing pollution levels.
Temperature drop
The snowfall in Chamoli and surrounding areas has led to a sharp fall in temperatures. Tourists in Auli and Badrinath are experiencing biting cold. The Meteorological Centre has advised people to take precautions while travelling in foggy and snowy conditions.
Weather will remain dry in most parts of Uttarakhand
According to the forecast, the weather will remain dry in most parts of Uttarakhand for the next two days. However, another change is expected on January 5, when rain and snowfall may return to the mountains. The weather is likely to stay dry again on January 6 and 7.
Tourists are enjoying the winter charm in Auli
Uttarakhand’s mountains are set for light snowfall, while the plains battle dense fog and poor air quality. Tourists are enjoying the winter charm in Auli and Chamoli, but travellers should remain cautious due to delays in flights, trains, and slippery mountain roads.
