New Delhi: In a shocking incident reported from Germany, an Indian man hailing from Telangana died after jumping off a burning building in Berlin. The man reportedly sustained severe head injuries due to the fall, said a report in NDTV. He hailed from Telangana's Jangaon district.
The deceased was identified as Thokala Hruthik Reddy from Malkapur village in the district. He had moved to Germany to pursue higher studies. According to his family, the building he was living in caught fire on New Year's day. In an attempt to escape the fire, Reddy decided to jump off from one of the upper floors of the building.
The jump proved fatal for the young man, who sustained severe injuries to his head. He was immediately moved to a hospital, but could not survive. Following his death, his family and fellow villagers back home in Telangana were left in grief and shock. The entire village plunged into mourning.
The student's family were eagerly waiting for him to come home, later in January for the festival of Sankranti, but unfortunately now only his body will arrive home. The New Year's Day, which was a time of celebration for the family, turned into grief just moments later, as news about Reddy's death reached the village.
Reddy had left his home to pursue an MS degree at the University of Europe. He moved to Magdeburg in Germany in June 2023, after graduating from Vaagdevi College of Engineering in 2022.
The German authorities and friends of Reddy in the country are helping his family with completing formalities to bring his body back to India. This death comes just weeks after a woman from the state died in the US. She was also caught in a house fire there and died of her injuries. They have also approached the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for help in expediting the process of bringing back his mortal remains to India.
Local authorities in Germany are also investigating the fire, trying to find out how exactly it started.
The woman who died in the US was identified as Sahaja Reddy Udumala, 24. She had gone to the US in 2021 for higher studies. She was staying in Albany, New York. Reports said that the fire started in a neighbouring house and spread rapidly and engulfed Sahaja's building. The woman was asleep when the fire broke out and therefore failed to escape.
