Dehradun: The plains of Uttarakhand are experiencing severe cold and dense fog. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for fog in isolated areas of Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, Champawat, and Pauri districts.

The fog has reduced visibility, making travel difficult for commuters. People are facing problems in the morning hours, while sunshine during the day is weak and unable to provide much relief.

Dry cold in plains

Despite sunshine, temperatures are dropping during the day. The cold wave has made life uncomfortable in the plains. Dim sunlight has increased the severity of cold. Many areas are reporting biting cold conditions, with people forced to stay indoors.

Snowfall in higher reaches

In the mountainous regions, snowfall has already occurred in the higher peaks after a long wait. The minimum temperature in some areas has dropped below zero. The effect of snowfall is also being felt in the plains, where cold winds are blowing.

According to the IMD, partly cloudy skies are expected in the mountains, with chances of snowfall on higher peaks. Rain and snowfall are likely to begin from January 6, bringing relief from dry weather.

Western disturbance active

Meteorologists say the change in weather is due to the activation of a western disturbance. On Sunday morning, Dehradun witnessed light fog, but sunshine appeared later in the day, giving temporary relief.

The IMD has predicted that the weather will remain dry for the next two days, before rain and snow return to the hills.
