Lucknow: With the increase in cyber fraud and online scams across the state, the Uttar Pradesh Government has announced the formation of cyber commandos across the state. The decision marked a crucial push to counter rising online crimes in the state.
Through this move, the state government is looking to create a special cadre of police personnel. These officials will be trained mainly to tackle cyber crimes, digital scams, financial scams and other online-related crimes, both in Uttar Pradesh and other states.
According to data by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), there were 10,794 cyber crimes in Uttar Pradesh in 2023, as compared to 10,117 in 2022. Uttar Pradesh is among those states that face the largest cyber crimes across the state.
In Kanpur alone, Rs 45.95 crore was lost due to cybercrimes. As many as 650 cases were registered in the same year, and 353 accused were taken in the same year. Nationwide, too, the cyber-related crimes have also increased sharply. As per authorities, around Rs 20,000 crore were lost due to cyber crimes last year.
Sharing further details, officials said that Cyber Commandos will function as a rapid response and intelligence unit in Uttar Pradesh. They will be equipped with advanced forensic tools, real-time data tracking systems, and specialised training, among others. They will also work closely with district cyber police stations, banks, and national cyber agencies, News 18 reported.
Recently, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had also asked senior officials to take the help of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies in order to tackle online threats. As per officials, these commandos will not only probe cyber crimes, but will also track online gangs and analyse digital money trails, among other functions.
