Dehradun: Uttarakhand has shown strong performance in controlling crime, as highlighted in the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report. The state has recorded a 12% drop in crimes against women and a 13% decrease in cyber sexual crimes.
These positive results were shared by Inspector General (IG) Dr. Nilesh Anand Bharne in a press conference held at Sardar Patel Bhawan, Police Headquarters, Dehradun.
Decline in crime cases in the last three years
In 2022, a total of 4,337 cases of crimes against women were registered in Uttarakhand. In 2023, this number fell to 3,808 and in 2024, it further dropped to 3,342. The IG said this steady decline is the result of continuous efforts by the Uttarakhand Police to protect women and ensure law and order.
There has also been progress in solving serious crimes. In 2024, only 56 cases of murder of women were reported, which is 1.75% lower than 2023. Cases related to dowry deaths also fell by 20% compared to last year.
Police solved 94% kidnapping cases
In kidnapping cases, 530 incidents were reported in 2024, and the police were able to solve 94% of them. Similarly, 98% of rape cases were solved, and the accused were arrested. The IG highlighted this as a major success.
Uttarakhand now ranks sixth in India in cyber fraud recovery
Cybercrime is another area where Uttarakhand has performed well. In 2024, cyber sexual crimes went down by 13% compared to 2023. The police have also recovered a total of Rs 47.02 crore in cyber fraud cases. Uttarakhand now ranks sixth in India in cyber fraud recovery.
The conviction rate in cybercrime cases is also a major achievement for the state. IG Bharne said that over 64% of cybercrime cases led to a conviction, which is more than double the national average of 27%.
He also clarified some confusion regarding a recent report about missing children. In 2023, 1,025 children were reported missing in Uttarakhand — including 729 girls and 296 boys. The police managed to recover 933 children (654 girls and 279 boys) by the end of the year. Some media reports mistakenly listed recovered children as still missing. As of now, 77 of the remaining 92 children have been found, and efforts continue to locate the rest.
State's recovery rate in theft cases is 52.4%
Uttarakhand has also done well in property recovery. The state's recovery rate in theft cases is 52.4%, while the national average is 31.4%. This means Uttarakhand’s rate is nearly double that of the rest of the country. In terms of Arms Act cases, the state ranks second in India, showing strong action against illegal weapons. For murder cases overall, Uttarakhand ranks seventh in India.
Police thanked the people for their support
IG Bharne praised the work of police teams and said their quick action, awareness drives, and public cooperation have helped improve safety in the state. He also thanked the people for their support and promised that the police will continue working to ensure peace and justice.
