New Delhi: A simple craving for a samosa turned into an unexpectedly expensive ordeal for a train passenger at Jabalpur railway station on October 17th. What should have cost a mere Rs 5 or Rs 10 ended up costing the man his watch.
The incident unfolded as the passenger attempted to make a UPI payment for his samosa purchase. Just as he was completing the transaction, he noticed his train beginning to depart the platform. In his haste to catch it, the samosa seller reportedly grabbed him by the collar, demanding payment.
The passenger's digital payment attempts failed, leaving him with no alternative. In a surprising move, he handed over his watch to the vendor as collateral for the snack.
A video capturing the dramatic exchange quickly went viral on social media, igniting a wave of outrage and debate. While many decried the vendor's actions as "shameful," others sympathised with his predicament, questioning what alternative he had if a customer left without paying.
The West Central Railway took swift action upon witnessing the viral footage. The samosa seller was identified as Sandeep Gupta. "At Jabalpur station, a vendor snatched the watch of a passenger after he made a purchase from him. Taking quick action, the Railway Administration identified the vendor and he was arrested under the Railway Act and a case was registered," stated Harshit Srivastava, CPRO of West Central Railway, to ANI.
Srivastava also confirmed that Gupta's vendor license was being cancelled. However, the swift arrest and subsequent actions against Gupta drew mixed reactions online, with some users highlighting his potentially humble background and questioning the severity of the punishment for what some perceived as a desperate attempt to secure payment.
