New Delhi: Societies across the world have traditions that are deeply rooted in their culture. Some of these practices might sound bizarre, but they are an inevitable part of their identity. Here we are introducing you to some of the most unique traditions across continents:
Finger cutting
Women from the Dani tribe in Indonesia's Papua follow this peculiar tradition of cutting their fingertips to express their sorrow after the passing of their loved ones. The custom is called Ikipalin. As per the tribe's beliefs, the physical pain of cutting a finger signifies the emotional agony undergone by an individual. Though women are the primary participants in the ritual, sometimes men holding leadership positions also take part.
Drinking cow's blood
This practice is seen among the Maasai tribe in Africa. Having cow blood mixed with milk is an ineludible part of their cultural identity. The practice is attributed to beliefs around strength and nutrition. The tribe does not kill the cow to collect the blood. Instead, they create an incision in the jugular vein of a live cow. After the blood is collected, the incision is covered with cow dung and the animal is left to recover.
Neck stretching
Kayan women who reside in parts of Thailand and Myanmar go through the hassle of stretching their necks, as it is seen that elongated necks are viewed as a symbol of beauty. The women wear brass coils around their necks till they achieve the desired results.
Body sacrification
Though the concept of body sacrifice may sound scary, it is practised by some communities in Africa as well as the Pacific islands. They scar their bodies with cuts and even burn parts of their body for the ritual. These practices are linked to specific, deeply-rooted beliefs.
