Bengal gets its own Bunty Babli gang as scammers use toy notes worth Rs 7 crore to fool people
A major loan scam involving fake and toy notes has been uncovered in West Bengal. The 'Bunty Babli' gang, led by Abhishek Tiwari and Teesta Sen, lured victims with promises of low-interest loans, collecting processing fees while delivering mostly worthless notes.
Kolkata: A few days ago, fake notes worth around Rs 10 crore were recovered from a godown in West Bengal's Sandeshkhali. This time, there is a sensational twist in the case. Not even fake notes, but the new 'Bunty Babli' gang of Bengal has become active in the trap of giving low-interest loans in play notes.
According to state police sources, the bundle of money recovered from the Sandeshkhali hotel contained only fake notes. There were also children's toy notes. Police said that after carefully examining all the bundles of notes, they found toy notes worth Rs 7.8 crore with the inscription 'Manoranjan Bank of India'. Also, the accused had Rs 40,000 worth of fake notes and Rs 52,000 worth of genuine notes. The 'Bunty Babli' gang was involved in this note business.
The trap of giving loans
'Babli', i.e. Teesta Sen, has already been nabbed by the police from Birbhum. Bunty, i.e. the head of the gang, Abhishek Tiwari, is still absconding. Police say that the 'Bunty Babli gang' was setting up a new fraud trap in the state in the name of giving loans. They set the trap of giving loans of more than ten, twenty, thirty crores at just 4 per cent interest without any documents. Tiwari would first show the bundle of notes filled in boxes on video calls to those who contacted him through the agent.
However, even though no documents were required to get the loan, they would take a processing fee of one per cent of the amount they would lend. The real purpose of this scam is to pocket this processing fee and disappear.
After the arrest of the two accused from Sandeshkhali, a businessman from Asansol contacted the police. He said that the accused had given him the toy notes of Rs 30 crore and fled with a processing fee of Rs 2.2 lakh. They had also come to deliver the notes to someone in Sandeshkhali.
A printing press businessman named Debabrata Chakraborty is involved in this scam. Teesta and Abhishek told him that they were making a movie and needed some fake notes to show in the movie. Abhishek printed Rs 7.80 crore worth of play notes.
According to police sources, Abhishek and Teesta were arrested in a cyber fraud case by the Kolkata Police in February this year. After being released, they started cheating people in the name of giving loans. Police say they used to make the bundle with real notes at the top, a few fake notes below, and the rest was packed with toy notes.
