Kolkata: Not 'Dadagiri', but this, TMC leader's 'Didigiri' took place at a college in West Bengal. In Jalpaiguri's Prasanna Dev Mahila Mahavidyalaya, student leaders from the party have harassed journalists and tribal group, with one TMC leader allegedly trying to snatch the journalist's camera.
The incident started with an abusive remark made to an Adivasi assistant professor named Monika Hansda in the college. A complaint was raised against the college authorities. A delegation from West Bengal Adivasi Kalyan Samity went to meet the college authorities on Monday afternoon.
When journalists went to the college to cover the incident, the security guards and TMCP leaders stopped them from collecting the news. Debashree Karji, an outsider Trinamool Students Union leader, tried to snatch the mobile phones of the journalists to stop them from taking pictures.
Later, when the tribal delegation went to meet the principal, the student leader of the college and the team of the outsider leader stood in their way. The tribal leaders were furious as they were blocked even after taking advance permission. Police personnel of the Kotwali police station came to the college after receiving the news. Later, however, the tribal leadership held a meeting with the college authorities.
On this day, an outsider student was seen sitting with her legs raised on the teacher's chair. The outsider named Murshida Parveen ran away after being questioned by reporters. The college authorities also made a clear statement that they are dissatisfied with the "persecution of outsiders".
According to the college authorities, the tribal assistant professor was given the charge of NSS, but the person did not do any work in that capacity, and instead gave various excuses. So a letter was sent asking the professor for a reason.
However, the leaders of the TMC are themselves angry over the harassment meted out to external student leaders of the party in educational institutions. Trinamool Chhatra Parishad district president Gaurav Ghosh was in Kolkata on the occasion of July 21. After hearing the matter, he expressed regret.
Rajesh Lakra said on behalf of Adivasi Kalyan Samiti that the principal assured that the assistant professor in question was not show-caused. However, he also said that he did not like the way TMC student leaders behaved with them in the college.
Pradhan Hembram, a former TMC leader and vice-president of Adivasi Kalyan Samiti, said, "The image of our party is being tarnished by how outsider girls protested in the name of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad in the college."
The president of the college's management group, Tapan Mitra, said, "There was a misunderstanding with a teacher. It has been resolved. But what happened with the journalists today was wrong. We did not order the security or anyone else to stop them."
CPM district secretary Piyush Mishra said, "Students have attacked tribal organisations and journalists. Outsiders have taken over colleges. This is the result of not having elections for a long time. We strongly condemn this incident."
