Kolkata: Law college rape survivor seeks transfer, father appeals to authorities citing trauma
The victim's father had appealed to the college authorities to transfer his daughter to a different college.
New Delhi: Following the horrifying rape incident that took place in a law college of Kolkata on June 29, the victim's parents urged the college authorities to transfer their daughter to some other college. The victim's father claimed that the incident had made her daughter devastated to the extent that she does not want to step into the same college once again.
In an interview with TV9 Bangla on Friday, the victim's father said, "My daughter is already mentally broken. If she sees that place again, she will be even more devastated. So, I don't want her to go to the same place. That's why I want to change her college." But when asked how it would be possible to change the college in the middle of the academic year, the victim's father said, "She has appeared for the first year exams. And I have also appealed to the college authorities, their law department and Calcutta University to consider my request. Now, the decision is upon them."
Staffer raped student inside college
The case dates back nearly three months, when a 24-year-old student of South Calcutta Law college was raped. The accused, Manojit Mishra was a former student of the college and a member of Trinamool Congress too. On 25th June, the victim had come to the college to fill in the college form for the annual exams. The accused, with two of his friends told to wait for some time. Then took her to the union room. Mishra then raped her while his accomplice watched the gruesome incident. The college security guard was also involved in the incident.
Following the incident, the three accused, Manojit Mishra, Zaib Ahmed, and Pramit Mukherjee, were barred from the college. Multiple cases of harassment had come up against Mishra after the case. The college authorities were questioned about their negligence. An alumnus of the same college, Mishra had huge clout over the students and authorities. He was officially a contractual staffer at the college. The college authorities decided to terminate the services of Mishra and expelled the other two students.
Similar incident
A year ago, a similar incident took place at the heart of Kolkata, wherein a Junior PGD doctor was raped and murdered inside the premises of RG Kar Medical College. On 10 August 2024, the accused, identified as Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer working for Kolkata Police was arrested under suspicion of committing the crime.
Three days later, the Calcutta High Court, transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), stating that the Kolkata Police's investigation did not inspire confidence. The junior doctors in West Bengal undertook a strike action for 42 days, demanding a thorough probe of the incident and adequate security at hospitals.
